New work by Santa Barbara local artist Virginia McCracken has arrived Upstairs

Virginia creates small-scale works in various media including assemblage, collage and acrylic paint on panel. Her paintings feature both abstract, formalist images and miniature still-life tableaus.
The assemblages are created in small boxes and many are inhabited by paper mache characters. The creatures are quirky, sometimes grotesque, but with sympathetic faces. Detail, minutiae and make-believe inform her work.
Virginia’s background is in clinical psychology, yet she has been making art, which is held by collectors internationally, for more than 30 years.

This New York Times book is a planner and a journal – and a journey down memory lane!

Libretto Books, known for its high-quality publications, produced this hardcover desk diary. It includes the perennials: 12 double-page monthly planners, a 2012-2013 calendar, a guide to major holidays, a ribbon marker, 12 pages to add your monthly birthdays, anniversaries, important dates.

Each month has wonderful “old school” escapism: nine blank journal pages – 108 journal pages total – for notes, thoughts, plans. These ruled journal pages are a welcome chance to jot down words by hand in a digital era.

Best of all are 13 historical New York photos from The New York Times archives, with 13 contemporary photos of the exact same locations. The acetate overlays on the old photos will mesmerize you on how much the city has changed – and how much it has remained the same. It’s a perfect way to match then and now in the greatest city in the world.

Happiness for Your Walls, Chalkboards and Mirrors

Created from Shanna Murray’s delightful drawings and lettering, this line sets itself apart. Simple, charming decals in matte & metallic finishes appear hand-painted, and are at once modern and a nod to nostalgic days gone by.

Born of the belief that we all need a little spot to tuck inspiration in, each piece in the collection is designed to create a perfect spot to celebrate the little things that make us smile. A little happiness for your walls.

Create an ever-changing space to celebrate those little things: a quickly jotted love note, cherished snapshot, or perfect fortune cookie fortune…pin them up inside a sweet garland for a happy reminder each time you pass by. jot a sweet note for one you hold dear, or cheer up your to-do list with a garland chalkboard calendar.

The decals are easy to install, simply peel away the back paper, stick to wall, burnish to wall with tool provided, and carefully peel away top protective paper. Voila, instant cheer! Happiness for your wall. Complete instructions and application tool included.

Decals are created from super thin vinyl, which allows each decal to appear hand painted. Because of the thin nature of the vinyl decals are not reusable, however, they are easily removable from most surfaces. Simply peel off the wall when you’re ready for a change! Damage to walls when removing the decals is not typical, though it cannot be guaranteed.

Decals adhere best to smooth surfaces, though they can be installed on slightly textured walls. Decals can be adhered to walls, windows, mirrors, chalkboards, furniture, laptops, and most any smooth surface you can dream up. Varied designs available in black, white, gold and silver. 24.00 to 48.00.

General Ignorance

From the brains behind The Book of General Ignorance comes another wonderful collection of the most outrageous, fascinating, and mind-bending facts, taking on the hugely popular form of the first book in the internationally bestselling series.

The original Book of General Ignorance was published in 2006. It has since been translated into twenty-six languages and sold over 1.2 million copies. Now, just when you thought that it was safe to start showing off again, John Lloyd and John Mitchinson are back with another busload of mistakes and misunderstandings.

Here is a new collection of simple, perfectly obvious questions you’ll be quite certain you know the answers to. Whether it’s history, science, sports, geography, literature, language, medicine, the classics, or common wisdom, you’ll be astonished to discover that everything you thought you knew is still hopelessly wrong.

For example, do you know who made the first airplane flight? How many legs does an octopus have? How much water should you drink every day? What is the chance of tossing a coin and it landing on heads? What happens if you leave a tooth in a glass of Coke overnight? What is house dust mostly made from? What was the first dishwasher built to do? What color are oranges? Who in the world is most likely to kill you?

Whatever your answers to the questions above, you can be sure that everything you think you know is wrong. The Second Book of General Ignorance is the essential text for everyone who knows they don’t know everything, and an ideal stick with which to beat people who think they do. 19.95

Just in Upstairs, two fun little paperbacks, packed with sass and style, and perfect for travel or living vicariously: My Little Paris, The Best Kept Parisian Secrets; and Parisian Chic, A Style Guide.

My Little Paris is the favorite website of Parisian women (200,000 women in Paris are members). In their first book, the creators of the site share their best-kept secret addresses in this book, to be the first in a series. Oh so chic and a little bit naughty, just like Parisian women, this is THE book to slip into your handbag when you visit the city. It is an amazing concentration of brilliant Parisian addresses illustrated by funny, elegant drawings by Kanako, a Japanese artist who captures on paper the Paris we all dream of.

Fany, the founder of My Little Paris, always finds well-hidden gems in the urban Parisian jungle. In two years, word of mouth turned her site into a must-have for Parisiennes. Completely unknown addresses, secrets for those in the know, and easy little escapades just to get out of the rut; all of this and more can be found in My Little Paris!

In Parisian chic, celebrity model Inès de la Fressange shares the well-kept secrets of how Parisian women maintain effortless glamour and a timeless allure. Inès de la Fressange—France’s icon of chic—shares her personal tips for living with style and charm, gleaned from decades in the fashion industry.

She offers specific pointers on how to dress like a Parisian, including how to mix affordable basics with high-fashion touches, and how to accessorize. Her step-by-step do’s and don’ts are accompanied by fashion photography, and the book is personalized with her charming drawings. Inès also shares how to bring Parisian chic into your home, and how to insert your signature style into any space—even the office.

The ultrachic volume is wrapped with a three-quarter-height removable jacket and features offset aquarelle paper and a ribbon page marker. Complete with her favorite addresses for finding the ultimate fashion and decorating items, this is a must-have for any woman who wants to add a touch of Paris to her own style.
