design book 1

Elle Decor: The Height of Style: Inspiring Ideas from the World’s Chicest Rooms. This hardcover showcases more than 220 stunning rooms selected by the editors of ELLE DECOR, the magazine that is the last word on exciting, cutting-edge, and eclectic style from around the world. A must for any decorating and design buff, it shows readers how to bring the flair, glamour, and individuality of the world’s chicest spaces into their own homes.

This intimate portrait of both iconic and unknown midcentury European designers and architectural masterpieces reveals an inspiring personal approach to modernism. This gorgeously photographed volume features the intimate and private spaces of both the icons and unknown vanguards of European midcentury architecture and design.

design book 5

“[Francois Halard's]…breathtaking new monograph…his romantic eye is drawn to organized chaos, quirky collections, and evidence of lives well lived. He celebrates bulletin boards, work studios, and seemingly mundane objects that inspire the pantheon of aristocrats, artists, and designers he documents.” -Architectural Digest. Released in 2013, this extravagant volume is the magnum opus of today’s most celebrated interiors photographer. One of Halard’s first assignments, to photograph Yves Saint Laurent’s legendary Paris apartment when he was in his early twenties, cemented his reputation as one of the most original eyes of our era. His unique photographic sensibility—old-world elegant and bohemian, accessible and personal—is instantly recognizable. Thirty years later, Halard still captures our imagination with his breathtaking photographs.

Springtime Wonderland

With so many new arrivals, Upstairs is a feast for the eyes and the senses. Here are some of our favorites this week!

Global Eye Collective: Sea Monsters & Curiosity

From designer Kristen Cramer’s Global Eye Curiosity Collection, we introduce her Sea Monster and Evil Eye pottery which are inspired by folklore, beliefs, and stories from around the world. Kristen’s love of history, beauty and nature playfully bring to life the age-old stories which explain the things that puzzle us and illuminate the things we know.

Black as the ocean depths and mysterious as the monsters there, these pitchers may hold your ales, your iced teas or your muddled cocktails. Some pitchers are made with real sea monsters while others just suggest their presence. All inspiration for the carvings, the tentacles, and the whispered stories they emit, comes from real maps from antiquity.

Alchemy Poison Cups: Made from the Terrors of Maple Creek! Like alchemists, Global Eye has taken base ingredients, formed them into cups, burned them in a fire at 2200 degrees and made these fine cups to cure all your ails and hold all your poisons such as coffee or cocktails. They will surely cure you of drowsiness or good judgement. Made with specimens collected on Maple Creek Trail in Santa Ynez. The terrors include rocks from the precipitous drop, waters from the cold creek, stinging nettles and poison oak. Each cup is totally unique and features a rock embedded into its body.

Evil Eye Medallions: Classic antiquity begat the curse of the evil eye – a malevolent glare which brings bad luck – and modern man continues to pursue protective measures against it with medallions. Hang yours over your front door, over the bed of a loved one, or in your boat galley and keep bad luck at bay.

Take It Outside

It’s spring – time to sweep off the patio and pool deck and move the family room outdoors! Upstairs is newly stocked with gorgeous, durable, classic patio furniture. We love these pieces because they are as comfortable as they are stylish. Take a tour of our patio.

This classic bistro table is a perfect complement to the retro 60s-style armchair which is built with an aluminum tube frame and a high-density technical resin seat with a criss-cross weave.

This low stacking table is made of aluminum and is the perfect little side table for outdoor lounging. The folding adjustable sunlounger has a lacquered steel frame with a high protection treatment that makes it durable for outdoor use. Cool and comfortable, the backrest and seat are made of outdoor technical fabric. The pillows shown here are made of Sunbrella fabric, able to withstand sunlight and keep looking beautiful.

Classic bistro folding chairs and tables popular among the lemonade sellers at the end of the 19th century. Lacquered curved slats in galvanized steel. Available in a variety of colors.

Spring Palette

Once in a while, we come across a new collection which captures a sense of ease and elegance with its combination of fresh palette and pattern. We have found just that in this line of cotton, hand blocked tablecloths, napkins, rugs and pillows. Inspired by warm vacation homes where hosts welcome their guests in simple, but gracious environments and where guests are honored and filled with wonder while in such pleasant ambiance. Unpacking these arrivals this week is the perfect segue to spring!

Gifts for Guys

Trying to find that just right gift for a man can be a challenge. From a leather jacket or the perfect pair of socks to an Italian leather wallet or a new book, we’re stocked with ideas. Hear are a few of our current favorites.

Turkish Style Towels from Ethiopia

There’s nothing like bringing in new towels to freshen up a bathroom or kitchen. We’ve just added these fair trade pieces to our collection. Handcrafted of 100% natural Ethiopian cotton, they’re machine washable and become softer with use. The hand towels are perfect for the bathroom or kitchen and we love the full size towels for the bath, pool or beach.

Because of this organization’s fair trade partnerships, the artisans are able to support their families through creating woven goods and are given access to health care, transportation and a savings account. They feel secure, happy and acknowledged by the generous attitude of their employer and lovely surroundings where they work. Their children are all being educated. Equitable employment and environmentally friendly production and processing practices are values central to the organization.

Jewelry Inspired by Nature

Carefully crafted by hand, these lovely pieces are inspired by the simplicity of nature. Pearls, labradorite, turquoise, chrysoprase, rainbow moonstone and black chalcedony combined with gold wire, strong nylon string and oxidized sterling silver chains, make them as versatile as they are beautiful. They work year-round, but we think they’re exceptionally feminine and fresh for spring and they’re perfectly priced to keep one for yourself and give one as a gift.
