Lisa Corti Spring 2012

We always look forward to our spring arrival of Lisa Corti tablecloths, table runners, coverlets, quilts and pillows. They’re a welcome dose of color!

Lisa’s designs are inspired by Africa, India and Italy. She was born in Asmara, Ethiopia where the beauty of the African people – their ancient decorative tradition and the brightly colored costumes worn by the local women – were imprinted on her memory.

Lisa later moved to Italy. Then began her many visits to India where she fell in love with its rich with color and history and realized its affinity with the Ethiopian world, especially when it comes to cloth, ornaments and colors.

She’s searched far and wide for fabrics and patterns throughout India. For Lisa, taste and beauty are not only aesthetic objectives; they are essentials that fill up her daily life, her furnishings and clothing. Geometry is a constant, as are the elements of nature, the intense colors, the transparencies and weightlessness of the fabrics for which her designs are known. Lisa invents things that she enjoys; she does not chase after fashion but goes for the sense of color, light and shape, in the constant search for symmetry between ancient and contemporary Western cultures.

Lisa Corti’s mézzari are made in India by the ancient technique of block printing fabrics by hand. Each of the carved wooden blocks is dipped in a different color and pressed onto the fabric; the pattern is formed with a slow and precise layering technique. Like any handcrafted process, block printing is subject to inevitable “imperfections” that actually increase the appeal of the finished product.

The mezzari is then handcrafted into bed spreads, quilts or tablecloths. The brightly colored and impalpable organza of Lisa Corti’s tablecloths, originally created for the turbans of Indian men, calls to mind the weightlessness and strength of pure color. Her bedspreads are made according to the ancient Mandala method: sewn entirely by hand and stuffed with a thin layer of pure cotton.

Lisa’s patterns mix beautifully for a dramatic effect or as a single shot of color and pattern with crisp white or in a monochromatic setting.
