The idea of TOMS Shoes came about in 2006 when one American traveler befriended the children of an Argentine village and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Seeing cuts and sores on their feet, he imagined a company that would match every pair of shoes sold with a pair given to a child in need. Within a year, he went back to that same village in Argentina with 10,000 pairs of shoes to match the purchases from caring TOMS customers.
What started in South American has continued around the world. TOMS has since given 50,000 pairs of shoes to the children in South African townships and informal settlements. TOMS next stop is Ethiopia.
